One person chooses to end his life every 5 minutes in India. That person could be anyone. Even you. Dabbling in the exciting world of making films I came up with this…

Brother’s Keeper – Canon 7D first look

Well…well…well… The baby has spoken!

Here's my first with the Canon 7d. A short short on sibling interactions. It's done as a "One shot – One minute" film with minimal post editing.

Was checking out the depth of field possibilities – amazing! The cam offers the possibility of shooting video the way we look at still images with subject isolation!
This does what big buck cameras would not do.

Slice of Life: Cleaning Fish (in 30secs)

Created this “Slice of Life” 30sec video, on the trot, in less than 30 minutes. I’ve gone real low tech on this one, experimenting with a Nokia 5800 mobile phone camera and Movie Maker for sequence edits.

Sequences are a big part of this video. I’ve used an opening long shot and then several medium close-ups and close-ups. Also note the action (cleaning the shells) and reaction (child’s face) shots. And finally, I’ve used a reverse-angle shot to try and get the child’s perspective.

The video sequences were shot in about 3 minutes and then edited.

I think this proves we do not need “pro” equipment to get started with learning. Once the skills come, the 5DMkIIs will follow:-)

Flowers of St Mary’s

On a warm and sunny Saturday evening, 200 odd little kids, 3 to 5 years old, parents in tow, assembled at the St Marys pre-primary school in Mapusa, Goa. As one parent put it, they were not used to being there in the afternoon. It was an unusual event for the little ones, one for which they’d been practising for weeks. The excitment was running high by the time the curtains went up for the pre-primary annual day event.

As the little ones trouped on stage for each of their performances, there was not a moment without excitement. The teachers and older students ensured continuous performances, as each troupe took a bow and walked off stage, the next ensemble was ready to get into the limelight.

The talent, the colours and the innocence were certainly not lost on the receptive audience. As the chief guest put it, parents need be proud of the alma mater, the school that encourages not just literacy but allround citizens. If this is a taste of future education at St Marys, the future is bright indeed!
